Sarah is one of the original students who have been dancing with me and attending my classes since the very beginning. First it was my Zumba® classes and as soon as I set up Dance Greystones in 2016, her name was on the list. It's now almost end of 2018 and Sarah hasn't missed a term. Not even one. This is what I call - dedication.
Meet Sarah Power. Sarah is a wife, a mom of 3 beautiful kids and a proud member of our Dance Greystones Family. Every time she walks into the studio she has an infectious smile on her face and not to mention delicious home baked treats at every video shoot for everyone to share.
When you meet her your first impression is that she is a woman who is full of positivity and enthusiasm.
Here is a little interview with Sarah about her story and how her dance journey affected her life for better.
What age were you when you first started dancing?
I think my first dance class was modern dance when I was seven years old.
Later in high school I was involved in cheerleading and also traditional Indonesian dance as I'm from Indonesia and it has always been very close to my heart.
How did you become a member of the dance fam 'Dance Greystones' and how old were you when you joined?
I was 38 years old when I discovered Vicky's Zumba® class. I tried it once and completely fell in love with it. From that point I went to all her Zumba® classes and no matter what was going on in my life I would never miss a class. I became pregnant when I was 38 and I continued to dance at Vicky's Zumba® classes right up until two hours before my waters broke and I had my third baby. And I was back just after two weeks.
When Vicky announced she was starting a new dance class I instantly wanted to join to find out what it was all about. And here we are, two and a half years later and it has to be one of the best things I have ever decided to do.
You haven't missed even one term in the past two and a half years, what made you stick with it since the very start?
Vicky is very inspiring and her energy when she dances is contagious which was one of the main factors that got me hooked to her Zumba® classes in the first place. And when it comes to Dance Greystones, apart from really enjoying learning the new routine for the term and the dancing being my main form of exercise, I have met some amazing people along the way who have become my close friends. I would have a major FOMO if I had to miss a term for some reason :)
I also love the chance to dress up and to take on a completely different character at each video shoot that we do at the end of every term. Because this class caters for any ability, there is no pressure and it makes you feel very comfortable even when you're starting as a complete beginner.
When you hear someone saying "Dance like nobody is watching", that is exactly what it's like in Dance Greystones class.
Did it have any impact on your every day life since you joined?
The dance classes are something I look forward to every week. It gets me out of the house and during that hour of dance I always forget about all my troubles.
"When you dance, you can enjoy the luxury of being you" - Paulo Coelho
How does dancing in general make you feel?
Dancing gives me a great sense of happiness and I also find that over the last 3 years my confidence has improved massively. When I first started I was very self conscious about myself and the way I moved. Thanks to these classes I'm much more comfortable and confident in myself.
What is your favourite dance so far and why?
My favourite dance routine was Volare from Gypsy Kings because I love latin style of dancing and my favourite video has to be Cuban Pete from the movie The Mask because it was so colourful and different to anything else we've done.
What is the most special memory you made through dancing?
There are so many memories we've made along the way. Every video shoot is so different, from the locations to the actual dance styles. One month we can be shooting on the top of the mountain and next month we could be in the cow shed. Even though the structure of the dance class is the same every term, the experience is always completely different.
But the main and the most special memory of all is the friends I have made through dancing and the good times we share whether during the classes or the shoots.
What would your advice be to anyone who would like to dance but is afraid it’s too late to start now?
Although I feel it is never too late to start, Dance Greystones is a perfect class to "give it a go". The environment is so welcoming and there is no pressure as there are all levels and abilities. The general vibe in the room is one of encouragement and fun.
When you find a passion that you love, it stays with you through all the stages of your life.
